Liberty enlightening the world the statue of Liberty enlightening the world ” was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was designated as national monument in 1924. Standing 305 feet [93 meter] high including its pedestal ,it represents a women holding a torch in her raised right hand and a tablet bearing the adoption date of the declaration of independence [July 4, 1776] in her left. The torch ,which measures 29 feet[ 8.8 meters] from the flame tip to the bottom of the handle, is accessible via a 42 foot- [12.8 meter] service ladder inside the arm [ this ascent was open to the public from 1886 to 1996.
